Mr. John T. Pointer, age 84, a longtime resident of Glade Street in Columbia Tennessee and the husband of Cleo Pointer, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 26, 2010 following an extended illness.

Funeral Services for Mr. Pointer will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Trent Ogilvie officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Born in Columbia, Tennessee, John was a member of Bethel Chapel AME Church. John was employed at the A & P food store for forty years. Upon retirement he opened a convenient store in Columbia called JP’s Mini Mart which he operated for almost 15 years. He later went into business with his son, Reggie, by opening, All American Bail Bonding Company.
He was selected as PTA president at College Hill while his children attended school there and was very active in community service and his dedication to the church.

John was a football official for the Negro Secondary School Athletic Association during Segregation, which included officiating at Carver-Smith High School. John also shared his love of sports with his family and took great pride in taking them to his son, John’s college and pro football games.
John was one of the founding members of the Friendly 15 Sportsman Club. He loved having his sons fish and hunt with members where they have established lifelong mentoring relationships.

John was preceded in death by his loving parents Leslie Pointer and Catherine Browne and leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Cleo, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on the day of his passing , his sons, Reggie and John, his devoted daughter-In-Law, Vicki, grandchildren: James, Maxmillion, Sean, and Danielle and great grandchildren: Rain, Skyy, and Daniel. He will also be missed by his Aunt Annie Browne, Uncle Claude Browne, cousins and devoted friend Darvin Greene of Los Angeles, CA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel Chapel AME Youth Program.
