Born in Tampa, Florida, he was the son of the late Eustis Lawrence Hawkins and the late Lila Grace Johnson Hawkins. He was a member of the West 7th Street Church of Christ and his favorite song was "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". He served our country in the United States Navy. His love for all mankind and his servant's heart led him to spending the majority of his life serving people in his faithful and dedicated service as a Fire Fighter employed by the Miami Florida Fire Department. He also served for over 33 years at 3 different churches as an elder. After moving to Tennessee, he served in Nashville for ten years with the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Program. His genuine love for all people drove him and his loving wife to put several young people through school. In addition to being sweet and kind, there were many sides to Mr. Hawkins. He enjoyed life and had a tremendous sense of humor as his fire fighter buddies can attest to as he enjoyed playing practical jokes on them.
He was non-judgmental and allowed people to make their own choices. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and serving with his church. His passion for his family was evident in all of his loving and caring ways. His wise and generous presence will truly be missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to his loving wife, he left behind to cherish his memory one daughter, Jade (Tom) Anderson of Columbia, TN; four sons: John (Kim) Hawkins of Marietta, GA, Joe (Janice) Hawkins of Dallas, TX, Jack (Michele) Hawkins of Burlington, NC and Johnny Townsend of Sanford FL ; two brothers: Wayne Hawkins of Orlando, FL and Ronnie Hawkins also of FL; 14 grandchildren: Heather, Jamie, Rachel, Seth, Joey, LeAnn, A. Nicole, Stephanie, Joshua, Adam, Jenny, B. Nicole, Justin, and Shepherd; and 6 great grandchildren: Braden, Kayleigh, Madeline, Kaitlyn, Jeffrey, and Beckett.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Martha Grace Stewart, and three brothers: Larry Hawkins, Jack Hawkins, and Donnie Hawkins.

Pallbearers will include: his loving grandsons and local Fire Fighters.

Memorials may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief 410 Allied Drive, Nashville, TN 37211.
