Waylan Cheek Dean, age 82, and a lifelong resident of Maury County, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 at NHC-Hillview.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with burial to follow in Maury Memorial Gardens. David Craig will officiate the services. The family will visit with friends on Monday, April 29, 2013 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home as well as two hours prior to the service on Tuesday. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family and in charge of arrangements.
Waylan was born on June 7, 1930 in Culleoka to parents Paul and Daisy Dean.
Waylan was educated in Maury County and graduated in 1948 from Central High School. He owned and operated Dean Roofing Company and Dean Real Estate and Auctions Sales, selling property in Maury and surrounding counties. He spent nearly eight years in the National Guard, reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class, Battalion Supply Sergeant. He was named Outstanding Soldier in the Battalion in 1966.
Waylan, an avid bowler, bowled in several leagues and was named to the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame in 2012.
Waylan is survived by the mother of his children, Joan Dean of Columbia; children: Teresa Dean of Columbia, Lisa Dean of Franklin, Chuck Dean of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Tracy Dean; his sisters, Ann Graham and Doris Inman; brother, Norman Dean; sisters-in-law, Amelia Dean and Jewell Dean.
He was very proud of his grandchildren Bentley, Maryville, Emily Dean of Chattanooga, and Andy Dean of Columbia. He also has seven nieces and nephews: Thomas (Nedra) Ashton, Houston of TX, Tim (Julie) Ashton of Denham Springs, LA, David (Susan) Ashton of Austin, TX, Eddie Inman of Lynnville, TN, Brenda Graham McGrath of Knoxville, TN, Ken (Rowena) Graham of Hendersonville, TN and Allison Dean Love (Phil) of Columbia, SC.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas Ashton and William (Billy) Dean and his son, Douglas Dean.
Pallbearers will be Glen Anderson, Sandy Burnett, Kirk Kelly, Jimmy Williams, Keith Baker, and Ken Graham.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Columbia Bowling Association and members at Dory Adams Pool Room.
