Mr. John David Potts, age 71, husband of Elizabeth Herndon Potts and a resident of Columbia, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 1, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 3rd at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 AM until the service hour at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
David was born December 26, 1941 in Columbia and was the son of Robert Easter Potts and Avalyn Whitley Potts. He was a 1960 graduate of Columbia Central High School where he played trumpet in the Lions Band and served as Drum Major. With a smooth voice, he attended radio school where he began to master his craft in radio. He was News Director at WKRM radio in the early 1970’s, and an announcer at WMCP.
David operated the Maury Independent Newspaper during its publication. When the 911 service came to the county, he joined as a dispatcher and remained there for 17 years. David served as a Judicial Magistrate from 2002-2008 and recorded several public service messages for radio.
In 1985 he founded the Duck River Squares, a square dance group in Maury County. He taught and called square dancing for 10 years, and was an honored member of the Middle Tennessee Square Dance Callers Association.
David is survived by his wife of 39 years: Elizabeth Herndon Potts of Columbia; three daughters: Pamela (Jerome) Arnell of Pulaski, Christy Hunt of Smyrna, and Krystn Potts of Columbia; a brother: Bobby Allison (Paula) Potts of Readyville; and sister-in-law: Marie Trent Potts of Murfreesboro. In addition, he is survived by 4 grandchildren: Allen Compton, Ray Hubbert, Andrew Hunt and Preston Hunt.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elizabeth Caperton Fund at the Maury County Library; 211 W 8th Street, Columbia, TN 38401.
