April 2, 1929 - November 8, 2013

John S. (“Jack”) Knox , age 84 of Columbia, passed away Friday evening, November 8, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 6:00 PM from the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, officiated by Barry Farris and grandsons: Joel Love (Youth and Associate Minister of Northview Church of Christ) and David Knox (Youth Minister of Otter Creek Church of Christ in Brentwood). The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 2:00 until 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Knox will be entombed in the Mausoleum of Maury Memorial Gardens in a private, family ceremony on Wednesday, November 13. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born April 2, 1929 in the family home in Lynnville, TN, he was one of six children of Julian and Corinne Parsons Knox. Jack was a man of great faith. Just shy of his 19th birthday, he married the former Peggy Underwood in Corinth, MS. Their lives were dedicated to each other as he provided for their family of six children, and she cared for their home. Together they trained and raised their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren over the next 65 years. During that time, Jack dedicated 39 years to his work at DuPont/Spontex, and his lifetime to the church through his efforts at the Stiversville Church of Christ as an Elder for almost 50 years.

Growing up in Lynnville, he was known for his work ethic and ability to handle a team of mules. His physical strength was seen in his work, but his firm discipline was evident in his family, although he didn't need to raise his voice. He believed in respect of others and taught his family how to show that respect as well.

He loved to play baseball, basketball and football in the pasture with his family, and enjoyed Rook and dominos in the winter months. Deep down, he could be described as a "child at heart", whether riding roller coasters or working puzzles. Through it all, he taught life lessons of dedicated work and faithfulness in his spiritual life.

Jack's legacy is evident in his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years: Peggy Knox of Columbia; six children: John S. (Brenda) Knox, Jr of Sparta, TN, Joy (Bob) Jones of Columbia, Jean (Jack) Love of Columbia, Jeff (Donna) Knox of Nashville, Jerry (Mary Jane) Knox of Columbia and Jill (Thomas) Riley of Columbia; four brothers: Joe (Belle) Knox of Knoxville, Bill (Joan) Knox of Mt. Pleasant, Edward (Martha) Knox of Germantown and Bob (Linda) Knox of Madison. His greatest treasures are his 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Margaret Hickerson, and daughter-in-law: Maria Thompson Knox.

Pallbearers will be grandsons: Ben Knox, Daniel Knox, Sam Jones, Jacob Love, Josh Love, Todd Knox, Jeremy Knox, Cody Riley and Preston Riley. Honorary pallbearers will be Grandsons-in-law, the members at the Stiversville Church of Christ, and Retirees of DuPont/Spontex.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Stiversville Church of Christ or the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Fund, 410 Allied Drive, Nashville, TN 37211.
