Carlton Benton Whitwell, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, died peacefully at home, Saturday, February 1st, after a long illness.
In accordance with his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carlton was raised in the Mt Joy community of Maury County. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding. As a young man, he was also a well known local dirt track race car driver. Carlton was the co-owner and respected Walker Coon Hound breeder and trainer for Swan Creek Kennels. In 1982, he won the Professional Coon Hunters Association National Championship.
Carlton worked for Western Electric for 25 years, retiring in 1982. He spent his retirement hunting, trail riding, and enjoying his grandchildren and animals.
He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Jayne Whitwell; children: Benton E. Whitwell of Columbia, TN, Brandy (Mark) Barker of Crestwood, KY, Rachel Whitwell of Mt. Pleasant, TN; grandchildren: Will Whitwell and Drew Whitwell of Mt. Pleasant, TN and Avery Barker and Jack Barker of Crestwood, KY; his sister: Larissa Delk of Columbia, TN; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, William Benton Whitwell and Osa Anderson Whitwell; three sisters, Jean Williams, Eleanor Hines and Shirley Allen; two brothers, Eldred Whitwell and Dennis Whitwell and children, Kay White and Pam Boshers.

He will be profoundly missed.
