Mr. Richard L. Burkeen, age 89, a resident of Columbia, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018 at NHC Columbia.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 1PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Yvonne Oglivie officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. A visitation will also be held on Monday from 12-1PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

A native of Maury County, Richard was the son of the late Lossie Burkeen and the late Anna Stevenson Burkeen. An extremely hardworking man, Richard worked as a brick mason for many years, always making sure his family was provided for and had the best life. One of his biggest hobbies was fishing. He also enjoyed and singing, especially his favorite song, Will the Circle be Unbroken. Richard loved helping people and was very active in his community. He specifically loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his sons: Terry (Donzella) Anderson of Shelbyville, Gary Anderson of Columbia, Chris Burkeen of Murfreesboro; daughters: Roslyn (Luther) Bellafant of Columbia, Carol Anderson of Shelbyville; brothers: Lossie Burkeen, Jr. of Columbia, James Cornelius Burkeen of Indianapolis, IN; sisters: Atheleen Burkeen of Columbia, Lizzie Mae Williams of St. Lois, MO, Janie Pearl Shaw of Indianapolis, IN, Annie Margaret Smith of Hope, MI, Amanda (Johnny) Armstrong of Columbia, Patricia Burkeen of Columbia; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Pearl Gladys Hubbell Burkeen; son: Marcus Burkeen; daughter: Lisa Burkeen; and brothers: William Henry Burkeen, Sam Horace Burkeen, and John R. Taylor.

Richard’s nephews will serve as pallbearers, and his nieces will serve as flower girls.
