Dorothy “Dot” Joyce Hopwood Owens, age 85, a resident of Santa Fe Pike in Santa Fe, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018 at NHC Columbia.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Sherry Ladd officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Owens addition to Santa Fe Cemetery by her beloved husband, Charlie, to whom she was married for over 46 wonderful years. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-7PM and again on Wednesday from 1-2PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Owens’ Hopwood ancestors came to America from England in 1635. The Willis and Bills ancestors also came to America and settled in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Her parents were the late A.C. and Bessie Hall Hopwood. She was born in Marshall County, Tennessee on November 1, 1932. She was a 1951 graduate of Marshall County High School and married Charles Fletcher Owens on December 22, 1951. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1997. She was a member of Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she taught adult Sunday school for seventeen years. She served on the Columbia Presbyterian Finance Board for several years, was a member of the Santa Fe Association, and was secretary and bookkeeper for Charles Owens Excavating and Grading for over thirty years. She was co-owner and manager of Owens’ Trailer Park for several years and co-owner and manager of Charlie’s Tool Store for several years. She was a certified Magna Charter Dame.

She loved God and her family. She loved to write poetry and several of her poems have been published. She was awarded Famous Poet of the year 2016 and Poetry Hall of Fame for 2017 by Poetryfest TV. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, and collecting antiques. Mrs. Owens had resided in Santa Fe since 1963.

She is survived by her sons: Charles Ray (Patsy) Owens of Santa Fe, David Phil (Jeannie) Owens of the Cross Bridges Community, Danny Marcus (Lynette) Owens of Santa Fe; brother: Herman Clay (Judy) Hopwood of Columbia, whom she and her late husband raised; sister in law: Maggie Hopwood of Lewisburg; grandchildren: Timothy Ray and Christy Fay Owens of Santa Fe; four great grandchildren; several step grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Claude Hopwood, Gail Hopwood, Dayton Hopwood, Billy Hopwood; and sisters: Virginia George and Betty Clifford.

Pallbearers will be: Ron Paul, Donnie Putnam, Jason Tate, Steve Clark, Tommy Davis, and Rick Fair. Honorary pallbearers will include: Dr. Dimaram, Dr. Thomas Farmer, Dr. Campbell Sowell, special cousin Dr. Michael Hill, Ruth Williams, Bobby and Joyce Floyd, Ellen Humphrey, Raybon Kelley, Gwen Kelley, Keith Baker, James Woody, Loraine Paul, Margo and Sweetie at Captain D’s, and those who served with her on the Finance Board of the Columbia Presbyterian.
