Katherine “Kitty” Oakes Moore, age 75, a resident of Rock Springs Road in Columbia, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 18, 2018 at her home.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Ward Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Freedom in Maury Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on January 1, 1943 in Portsmouth, Ohio, Kitty was the daughter of the late Arthur Albert Oakes and the late Mary Ellen Williams Oakes. She graduated from Clay High School in 1960 and Marshall University in 1963 from the School of Nursing. She spent her first years as a nurse at Southern Ohio Medical Center and finished her career from Maury Regional Medical Center. She was very proud of her 40 year career as a registered nurse. Kitty also loved traveling, especially anywhere on the water. She enjoyed the many years she spent sailing with her husband George on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway on their boat “Movin’ On Up”.

She is survived by her step children: Karen (Sharon) Moore of Seattle, WA, Susan Stiddum of Nashville, TN, Carl (Karen) Moore of McClellanville, SC, Bonnie (Ken) Kayser of Augusta, NJ; five step grandchildren; and nieces: Juli M. Spann, Lara L. Andrews, and Teri O. Davis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: George Moore on December 1, 2013; brother: Charles W. Oakes; and sister: June Ford.

Pallbearers will include members of the Wood Family who have graciously looked after “Miss Kitty” in her later years.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Hospice Compassus for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
