Jimmy Sowell

August 17, 1932 - November 9, 2017

James “Jimmy” Edgar Sowell, age 85, resident of Santa Fe, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 12th at 5:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Sheriff Bucky Rowland and former Sheriff Enoch George officiating.  The family will visit with friends from 3:00 PM until the 5:00 PM service at the funeral home.  Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jimmy was born August 17, 1932 in Maury County and was the only son of the late James Thomas Sowell and the late Ruth Shackelford Sowell.  He was a 1950 Santa Fe High School graduate and served our country in the United States Army until his father became ill and he was released to come home. He then went to work at Union Carbide where he continued to work until his retirement in 1994.  He married the love of his life Myra Jordan Sowell in 1955 who preceded him in 2012.  Jimmy’s favorite hobby was farming.  He raised wheat, tobacco, cattle, hay and gardens.  He cut and baled hay for years as long as he was able.  He was a man of his word, where a handshake was all he needed and he expected the same from everyone else.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter: Jean (Jerry) Ogg of Columbia; son: Steven Sowell (Dawn Scott) of Santa Fe; grandchildren: Holly Adams (Jason Kelley), Cody Sowell, and Jonathan Ogg; and great grandchildren: Madison Marshall, Karma Stewart, and Scarlett Sowell; and his beloved pet Maddie.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and kindness shown by the staff of Maury Regional Medical Center Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit and also Dr. J. Cummins Couch III and his staff.
