Mr. Jonas W. Whitwell, age 42, Columbia Fireman and EMT, and resident of Mt. Pleasant, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 3, 2017.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 4PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Bro. Mark King and Chief Ty Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Bailey Cemetery in the Mt. Joy Community of Mt. Pleasant. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8PM and again on Friday from 3-4PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on July 1, 1975 in Davidson County, Jonas was the son of Bruce Lee (Pauline) Whitwell and Sandra Bernice Staggs Lovett. He was a graduate of Spring Hill High School and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He worked as a Firefighter EMT for the Columbia Fire Department at Station 2 on Lion Parkway. His lifelong dream was to become a fireman, and his fireman family said that he was the most loving person they had ever met. He enjoyed remodeling homes and was the owner and operator of Whitwell’s Painting in Maury County. Jonas enjoyed laughing and loved giving hugs. He was an excellent mechanic who loved cooking, working out, and grooming a beard he couldn’t grow! Above all else, he loved his three children: Noah, Mathan, and Gracie.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sons: Noah and Mathan Whitwell both of Mt. Pleasant; daughter: Gracie Whitwell of Mt. Pleasant; brothers: Ryan Whitwell of Summertown, Christopher (Brittany) Whitwell of Lewisburg uncles: David (Jina) Whitwell of Mt. Pleasant, A special uncle, friend, and mentor George (Bunny) Whitwell of Mt. Pleasant, David W. Staggs of Texas; aunts: JoAnn Staggs of Summertown, Donna Staggs of Texas; special friend and mother of his children: Kelly Whitwell; and first cousin by blood sister by heart: Katie (Kevin) Boshers.
He was preceded in death by his uncle: Odie Lee Staggs, Jr.; grandparents: George Washington Whitwell, Sr., Mary Imogene Whitwell, Odie Lee Staggs, Sr. and Orphia Aletha Staggs.
Pallbearers will be: Noah Whitwell, the Firemen of Station 2: Albert Lynn, Jason Delk, Donnie Knoepfel, Randy Jones, Joe Grooms, Gary Olson, Justin Rossano, and the Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will include: Columbia and Maury County firemen, and Albert Lynn and Wayne Stacy, and all Maury County Emergency Services.
