Rev. Gene Shelton, 84, resident of Columbia and Pastor Emeritus for Grace Church of the Nazarene, passed away early Tuesday morning at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 7, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Mark Lindstrom officiating. Burial will follow in the Maury Memorial Gardens adjacent to Heritage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Roger Shelton, Mark Shelton, Cody Loggins, Ethan Shelton, Danny Collins, George Loggins, Taylor Loy and Steve Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Grace Church of the Nazarene.

Born December 1, 1932 in Nashville, TN, Gene was the son of the late John Henry and Etta Baggett Shelton and husband of the late Frances Rodgers Shelton. He had a Master’s Degree of Divinity and was a Nazarene minister. Gene was an accomplished golfer who enjoyed playing softball, basketball and was a golden gloves boxer.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his sons: Dexter (Kay) Shelton of Madison, AL, and Dan (Tracy) Shelton of Niceville, FL; daughters: Deb (Danny) Collins of Columbia and Jane (George) Loggins of Brentwood; grandchildren: Rebecca (Taylor Loy) Shelton, Roger (Allison) Volek Shelton, Mark (Joanna) Shelton, Ethan Shelton, Haley Shelton, Shelly Loggins and Cody Loggins; great grandchild: Evan Loy. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister: Stella Lee and brothers: Ed Shelton and Hershel Shelton.
