Mr. James “Jimmy” Hanback, age 71, husband of Shirley Walters Hanback, and a resident of Columbia, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 12PM at Heritage Funeral Home with David Usry officiating. Entombment will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with military honors provided by the National Guard. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM and again on Thursday from 11AM-12PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on February 27, 1946 in Ardmore, AL, James was the son of the late James Bomont Hanback and the late Margarette Willingham Hanback McGee. He served his country in the National Guard for 21 years before retiring as a Major. He earned his associate’s degree in pre-engineering in 1980 from Columbia State Community College and his bachelor’s degree in 1988 in electro-mechanical technology. James began his career in 1964 at Brown Engineering Company, Northrop Space Labs, and The Boeing Company in Huntsville, AL. In 1966 he worked for Ferro Corporation, Fiberglass Division as special projects engineer, operations manager, and a design draftsman. For years, he designed and drafted house plans for many Columbia homes. In 1971 he worked at General Electric Co., where over time he wore many hats including, beginning as shop operations specialist and ending as plant manager. In 1994 he worked as Vice President of Tennessee Operations at Ganton Technologies, Inc. in Pulaski and later started his own business, Home Consulting Services, Inc. From 1998-2003 he was the owner and operator of Custom Automotive Accessory Center. He was a member of Maury Regional Medical Center Advisory Board, was Vice President of the Maury County Manufactures Bureau, executive board member of Columbia State Community College’s Tech Program, was on the Industrial Technology Board at Columbia State Community College, a member of the American Society of Quality Control, a member of the National Association of Home Inspectors, a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors, and was a certified quality engineer. During his career he also earned three G.E. managerial awards and the Jack Welch CEO Award. Most recently he was the Associate Pastor at Mt. Wesley Akin Nazarene Church.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his sons: James “Ricky” (Paula) Hanback, Jr. of Columbia, Jeremy (Allison) Hanback of Columbia; brothers: Jeff (Phyllis) McGee of Santa Fe, James McGee, Jr. of Killen, AL; step-brother: Jimmy (Sue) McGee of AL; step-sister: Paulette (Tony) Isabel of Columbia; grandchildren: Laura Bagnall, Will Spencer, Hensleigh Hanback, Lainey Hanback; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be: Larry Weaver, Larry Fox, Jimmy Woodall, Charles Pigg, Athen Jones, Jeff Fox, and Reece Robertson. Honorary pallbearers will include: the Staff of Right Care Clinic, Northside Medical Center, and Maury Regional Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Mt. Wesley Akin Nazarene Church: 2013 New Highway 7, Columbia, TN 38401.
