It is with great respect and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sammie Lee Briggs, Sr.

Sammie Lee Briggs, Sr., age 87, husband of Billie Catherine Dame Briggs, and resident of Columbia, TN, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

Born January 27, 1930 in Greenbrier, TN, Sammie was the son of the late Myrtle Jones Briggs Clark and the late Elmer Briggs. In addition to his wife, Billie, he is survived by his sister, Reba McMahon. He is preceded in death by his former wife of 29 years, Peggy Nell Sterry Briggs.

Sammie is survived by his son, Sammie Lee Briggs, Jr., daughters Rebecca Briggs (Michael) Gurley and Renee Briggs (Tim) Stanley, step-daughters Donna Dame (Keith) Summar and Joanna Dame; beloved grandchildren Kaleb Briggs, James (Sabrina) Briggs, Holly Mainstruck, Kayla (Wayne) Catron, Marshall Summar and Alexander Dame; great grandchildren Kaylee Briggs, Deacon Briggs and Lucas Catron. His dog Mandy continues to look for him to come home.

Sammie Lee Briggs, Sr. served his country in active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard and also the U.S. Air Force.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 45 years. He previously worked at AVCO Aerostructures and also Maury Regional Hospital.

Sammie cherished his work and the people whom he met along the way. He was always ready to help when someone reached out. After retiring, Sammie and his wife, Billie, enjoyed camping for many years. He was an avid gardener and woodworker. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church.

Sammie will always be remembered as a beloved husband of 36 years to Billie, a devoted father and extraordinary grandfather.

A private family memorial is being held to celebrate his life. The sun has set on his beautiful soul and he would want us all to remember him by doing good deeds.

In lieu flowers, education contributions can be made for Alexander Dame through First Farmers and Merchants Bank, Columbia, TN, Attn: Trenton Schmidt.

Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
