Sara M. Secor

December 4, 1930 - October 27, 2016

Sara Louise Marshall Secor, age 85, a resident of The Heritage in Brentwood, passed away Thursday, October 27th.

Sara devoted her life to her family, friends, and church, expressing and demonstrating care and concern for their well being even as she fought leukemia during her last few months with us.

Born in Prentiss County, Mississippi and raised on a farm near Baldwyn, Sara graduated from Northeast Mississippi Junior College in 1951. (She was also the JC’s first homecoming queen!)

She then went to Memphis where she worked as secretary to the manager of the MGM Studio distribution center. She vowed she would never date one of the rowdy sailors from the Naval Air Station there, but met one special one, William “Bill” Secor, and married him on June 1, 1954. Sara and Bill enjoyed 58 years of marriage during which they raised three children: Marsha, Cynthia, and Evan.

Forty-three of those years they spent in Dallas, TX where Sara was very involved in the Lake Highlands community. When she wasn’t cooking, cleaning, gardening, or sewing for her family, she worked on behalf of her church, Northminister Presbyterian, and later, Lake Highlands Presbyterian, in many capacities. She was active in Circle, served as elder, a deacon, and on the Session, and taught Sunday school. She chose to be a Camp Fire Girls Leader and Boy Scout den mother and volunteered for many years at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Sara and Bill also enjoyed traveling, particularly to Hawaii and England where they loved visiting the Yorkshire Dales.

After they moved to Tennessee in 2007, Sara continued her commitment to family, church and community. She cared for Bill as he fought Parkinson’s disease until his passing in 2012. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church (Franklin), volunteered for the Library Committee at the Heritage and enjoyed participating in the Handicrafters group there sewing and knitting items for people in need.

Sara will be dearly missed by her three children and their spouses, Marsha and Robbie Tucker of Franklin, TN, Cindy and Mike Welsh of Greeley, CO, and Evan and Ginny Secor of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren and great grandchildren who will miss her loving touch are: Tyson and Paige Tucker and children: Mason, Linley, and Bennett of Houston, TX; Kirstin Tucker of New York, NY, Jacqueline Welsh of Los Angeles, CA, Edward Welsh of Fort Collins, CO, and Will and Jim Secor both of Atlanta, GA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Franklin First Presbyterian Church, Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society,

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 1st at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Franklin, 101 Legends Club Lane, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 PM. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
