Ruth Irene Hill

August 14, 1945 - October 10, 2016

Ruth Irene Gowan Hill, age 71, of Columbia, passed away October 10, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 13th at 3PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Billy Brown officiating.  Burial will follow at Hill Town Church of Christ in the Hill Town Community.  The family will visit with friends on Wednesday from 4-8pm at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ruth was born August 14, 1945 in Williamson County and was the daughter of the late LaFayette Franklin Gowan and the late Martha Elizabeth Gowan.  She attended Columbia Central High School and married James W. Hill in May of 1965, who preceded her in death in 2011.  They were married for 45 years.  She was a member of Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed being a homemaker.  Ruth was always putting others before herself.  She was a family person that loved her grandkids.  They were her pride and joy.  Because she was always taking care of others, she was known as “Memaw” to everyone, not just her grandkids. She will be remembered as a selfless lady that had heart of gold.

Ruth is survived by her daughters: Crystal Hill of Columbia and Tammie Hill of Columbia; sons: Jeffery W. (Candy) Hill of Columbia and Michael J. (Beverly) Hill of Santa Fe; brothers: Billy (Barbara) Gowan of Columbia, James Gowan of Columbia, and Larry Gowan of Columbia; sister: Frances Hall of Columbia; grandchildren: James Cory (Shayla) Hill, Christopher Hill, Julie Hill, James W. Hill, Cody Goodwin, Jacob Hill, Blake Bolton, Lea Richardson, Shayna Keels, and Taylor Roberts; and two great grandchildren: Peyton Hill and Braylon Hill.

Along with her husband and parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her siblings: Barbara Schrimsher, Fred Gowan, Charles Gowan, and Sammy Gowan.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Gowan, Tony Sullivan, Wayne Gowan, Tommy Vaughn, Gary Baucom, and Johnny Hill.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Hall and all her nieces and nephews.
