Mr. Howard Wesley Hay, Sr. age 96 ½, a resident of Columbia, went home Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Ledbetter and Bro. Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3-7PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
A native of Maury County, Wesley was born on March 30, 1920 and was the son of the late Luther Eugene Hay and the late Evaline Brady Hay. He served his country in the United States Army as a technical sergeant during World War II where he was awarded World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, AP Theater Ribbon and One Bronze Service Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and One Bronze Star, GO 23 Hq USAFFE 45, Meritorious Service Unit Award, and GO 115 Hq Corps 45. Wesley worked as an automobile and heavy equipment mechanic and ran his own auto repair shop, Hay’s Auto Repair, for over 50 years. He enjoyed fishing and farming. He had a passion for old cars and making contraptions out of nothing.
He is survived by his children: Wesley (Billie) Hay, Jr. of Thompson’s Station, Carolyn Walker of Murfreesboro, Elaine Hay (Victor Morsette) of Pegram, Sheila (Wayne) Martin of Santa Fe, Darryl “Winnie” Hay of Columbia, Tammy (Gary) Pruitt of Hampshire; daughter-in-law: Phyllis Hay of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Jason Hay, Suzanne (Jimmy) Bennett, Brad Walker, Keith Walker, Matthew Pruitt, Sabrina Pruitt, Joey Hay, Cheyenne Martin, Steven Hay; and great grandchildren: Tristan, Sarah, and Benjamin Bennett, and John, Camron, Ethan, Gabby, and Leah Hay.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Mildred Chapman Hay; sons: Mike and Gary Hay; and son-in-law: Charles Walker.
Pallbearers will be: Victor Morsette, Gary Pruitt, Brad Walker, Keith Walker, Joey Hay, and Wayne Martin. The Elk’s Lodge #686 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
