George Stephen Sutherland, age 78, a resident of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services for Mr. Sutherland will be conducted Friday, July 29th at 11 AM at Parkway Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28th from 4-8 PM at Parkway Baptist Church. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Born on February 17, 1938 in Columbia, George was the son of the late George Floyd Sutherland and Anna Ethel Knox Sutherland. He was married to the late Shelby Jean Davis Sutherland, who preceded him in death in 2012. He worked as a mechanic and maintenance for Stauffer Chemical Company. His hobbies were drawing, watching the older cartoons, and playing video games. He liked to tinker with cars and mowers and teach his children to play ball. Known as “Thin Man”, he was a member of the Monkey Dusters C.B. Club. A member of Parkway Baptist Church, he loved his church and church family.
He is survived by his son: Barry Stephen Sutherland (Elaine Stubblefield) of Mt. Pleasant; daughter: Debra Jean (David) Stanfill of Columbia; son-in-law: Paul (Teresa) Vaughn of Columbia; brother: Bill (Jewel) Sutherland of Hazel Green, AL; grandchildren: Caryn (Michael) Lyons, Stephen (Ashley) Lunn, Shana (Ryan) Powell, Susie (Blake) Bolton, Stephen Stanfill; great grandchildren: Jayda Lyons, Michael Lyons III, Samantha Stubblefield, Ariel Bolton, Bella Bolton and Rhettley Powell; nieces: Sandy Holt and Denise Scott; nephews: Bill Sutherland, Dennis Sutherland, and Scotty Pundt.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter: Carrie Vaughn; and sister: Lilla Mae “Cookie” Sutherland.
Pallbearers will be Blake Bolton, Ryan Powell, Tommy Goetz, Jesse Lancaster, Ray Odom and Keith Odom. Honorary pallbearer will be Paul Vaughn.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the ICU Step Down nursing staff at Maury Regional Medical Center, Dr. Ben Gardner, and Dr. Griffin Guice.
