Mr. James P. Morton, age 69, a resident of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016 at his residence.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens, adjacent to Heritage Funeral Home. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on July 24, 1946 in Hickman County, James was the son of the late Elbert Morton and the late Ethel Malugin Morton. He was of the Baptist faith and liked hunting, fishing, and farming. He also enjoyed mules, working in tobacco, buck dancing and square dancing. James was a dairyman for many years and previously worked as a truck driver for McCandless Trucking.

He is survived by his sons: Mark (Emily) Morton of Mt. Pleasant, Danny (Robbie) Morton of Union City; daughter: Syvia (Allen) Arnold of Mt. Pleasant; brother: Charles Morton of Summertown, sister: Linda (Tommy) Hedrick of Columbia; grandchildren: Michelle Vaughn, Adam Lee Morton, Mark Allen Morton, Justin Smith, Chad Smith, Hailey Madison Morton, Zaylee Morton, Jack Hayden Morton, Floyd Williams, Kayla Arnold, Tucker Morton, Mason Morton; and great grandchildren: Elizabeth Shaffer, McKinzie Shaffer, Megan Smith, Nathan Smith, Kolhby Williams, Dillon Williams, Isaiah Morton, Aaron Morton, Destin Hester, Ansleigh Hester, T.J. “Skeeter” Hester, and one on the way: Graceland Leann Morton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Boyd, Wayne, and L.B. Morton; and sisters: Ruby Mohrmann, Pauline Blair, and Ruth Davis.

James’ grandsons will serve as pallbearers and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
