Mr. Tony E. Underwood, age 69, husband of Betty Underwood, and a resident of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, February 1, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Franklin Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Hargrove Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on November 11, 1946 in Columbia, Tony was the son of the late Nathan Underwood and the late Ina Mae Thurman Underwood. He was a 1964 graduate of Jones High School in Lynnville and served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Browns Chapel Church of Christ and was retired from the United States Postal Service. Tony was a minister at Browns Chapel for four years where he also taught Sunday school classes for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed working on cars and racing. Tony was also an avid football fan, especially the UT Vols and the Tennessee Titans.

In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by his sons: Brett Evans (Shannon) Underwood of Madison, AL, Jason Bart (Tabitha) Underwood of Mt. Pleasant; sister: Peggy Knox of Columbia; grandchildren: Belynda Henry, Cassidy Underwood, Julia Underwood, Tony Underwood, Devon Underwood, Andrew Barnes, Jordan Underwood, Riley Barnes, Connor Underwood, Walker Underwood; and great-grandchildren: Scarlett Underwood and Chloe Smelser.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Betty Ann Jett and Julia Lee Underwood.

Tony’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be: the present and past employees of the Columbia Post Office, Jones High School Class of 1964, and the men of Browns Chapel Church of Christ.
