Mr. Walter B. Jewell, Sr., 100 years and 10 months, died at his home on N. Hardin Drive on Friday, October 16, 2015. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM as well as on Monday one hour prior to the service. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Walter was the 10th child born to Laura and Aaron Jewell in Hickman County, TN. He was married for seventy years to the love of his life, Elaine Mayberry Jewell who preceded him in death in 2003. In his younger years, Walter worked nearly 10 years at Tennessee Knitting Mills. He was employed with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company for over thirty years. Walter successfully earned a living as a district manager for National Life both in Hopkinsville, KY and Columbia, TN. Retirement in 1974 did not stop Walter's willingness to serve. He began working for the IRS and as a paralegal for the Senior Citizens of Columbia. He has been an active member with the Gideons International and Kiwanis Club of Columbia. Walter and Elaine were long time faithful members of the First Church of the Nazarene. In his later years, Walter enjoyed meeting with friends at Hardees for breakfast and at McDonalds for lunch. He called these his "Coffee Club." He was beloved and adored by his two children: Betty Elaine (Dr. William T.) Slonecker of Primm Springs, Walter Benson (Bernice) Jewell, Jr. of Columbia; grandchildren: Greg Slonecker of Franklin, Susan Lyn Slonecker of Nashville, Chris (Meredith) Slonecker of Primm Springs, Holly (David) Barnett of Spring Hill, and Heather Bowen of Columbia; seventeen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. They loved their Pipa dearly! In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson: Zachary Jewell; brothers: Everett, Stanley, William, John A., and Ocie Jewell; and sisters: Mattie Story, Lilly Mae Slayton, Mary Rodgers, and Annie Rochelle. Pallbearers will be: Walter Jewell, Jr., Chris Slonecker, Jack Slonecker, Greg Slonecker, Ben Iglesias, Jonathan Bowen, Jacob Bowen, and David Barnett. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia, members of the Gideons International, Senior Adult Sunday School Class of First Church of the Nazarene, Dr. John Simmons, and Dr. John Maloof. Jewell, Sr. will always be grateful to Donna Campbell and the loving care she gave to him during his last months.
