Sammy L. Gaskill, age 76, a resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday morning, July 28, 2015 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, August 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Pegram, TN with Steve Swango officiating. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born on June 18, 1939 in Maury County, a native of Gaskill Branch in the Santa Fe Community, Sammy was the son of the late Sammuel and Tinnia Hill Gaskill. Sammy quit school at the age of thirteen and started working for a grocery store, picking up cold drink bottles. He was later promoted to delivering groceries. With his mother's permission, at the age of sixteen, Sammy joined the Navy where he operated the wench deck on an ammunition ship. When he returned home from the Navy, he became store manager of IGA grocery store. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing as well as decorating. Sammy is survived by his son: Tim (Cindy) Gaskill of Madisonville, KY; daughters: Brenda (Donald) Lovely of Culleoka, Kitty Gaskill of Columbia; sister: Helen King of Columbia; grandchildren: Cody (Melissa) Rowland, Michael Gaskill, Donald (Melissa) Lovely; and great-grandchildren: Jaxson Rowland, Jacoby Rowland, Caleah Rowland, Hayden Lovely, and Katlyn Lovely. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Betty Lou Stewart Gaskill; and his sister: Nancy Gibson.
