Joe Henry "Mr. Joe" Mathers, age 86, resident of Hampshire Pike in Columbia, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A funeral service for Mr. Joe will be held Tuesday, May 19 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Frances Orr officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 11:00 until service at 2:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born January 23, 1929 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Annie Mae Frierson Mathers and husband of the late Irene Snipes Mathers, who preceded him in death in 2012. Mr. Joe worked as a washer for Monsanto Chemical and was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post #170. He loved to watch wrestling and baseball and was a member of the 8th Street Church of God. Mr. Joe is survived by his sons: Danny T. Snipes, Ira Joe (Ann) Mathers and Randy (Colleen) Mathers, all of Columbia; step-brother: Mike (Cathy) Garner of Nashville; special grandson: Randy (Beth) Mathers, Jr.; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law: Mark Snipes; sisters-in-law: Joann Armstrong and Lois Snipes; special friend: John Smith; host of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Terry Snipes; brother: McKinley Mathers; sister: Nevada Williams. Pallbearers will be grandsons, and flower bearers will be granddaughters.
