Emerson John Phelps, age 46, Maury County Sheriff's Deputy, of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 2, 2015. A memorial service with honors provided by the Maury County Sheriff's Department will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 6:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Sheriff Bucky Rowland and Chaplain Greg Norton officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 4:00 PM until the service time. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born on January 1, 1969 in Utica, New York, Emerson was the son of Leola McCune (Angelo Platoni) Phelps of Moira, NY, and the late Everest Phelps. He was of the Christian faith and a valuable member of the Maury County Sheriff's Department. He had a true passion for serving his community, and spent countless hours helping children any way he could. He will be remembered as a loving son, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service to his family and community. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter, the pride and love of his life, Emilia Lyndsey Hope Phelps; brothers: Philip (Peggy) Phelps of Bristol, VT, Dwayne (Rhonda) Phelps of Niverville, NY, Parish (Ashley) Phelps of Columbia, TN; sisters: Tanya (John) Kerns of Boss, MO, Darline Phelps of Moira, NY, Tara (Scott Sabin) Gonio of Moira, NY; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom he shared many precious memories which left lasting impressions on their lives. He loved spending time with his three special nieces: Anna Arnett, Kanvas Phelps, and Karysma Phelps. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lynn Joseph Phelps. The Maury County Sheriff's Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Maury County Sheriff's Department at 1300 Lawson White Drive, Columbia, TN 38401.
