Mr. Mathew Floyd Blackburn, age 27, a resident of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 5, 2015. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Porter's Chapel United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Bro. Ed Brennan officiating. A visitation with the family will also be held on Sunday one hour prior to the service from 2:00 - 3:00 PM at the church. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A native of Maury County, Mathew was born on January 17, 1988 and was the son of Thomas "Tommy" and Bonnie Floyd Blackburn. He was a 2006 graduate of Santa Fe Unit School and worked in Tech Support at IBEX in Spring Hill. Mathew was also a member of Porter's Chapel United Methodist Church. He enjoyed listening to music as well as reading. Some of his favorite authors include: George R.R. Martin, J. R.R. Tolkien, and Hunter S. Thompson. Mathew had most recently been teaching his son about science and astronomy, often visiting the NASA website, learning and teaching Eli about the moon and stars. He grew up cooking with his "Granny" and enjoyed cooking later on in his life as well. Mathew especially had a close relationship and tight bond with his "Papa" whom he looked up to and wanted to make proud. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son: Eli Thomas Blackburn of Columbia; wife: Christa Sligar Blackburn of Columbia; sister: Marina Kaye Blackburn of Santa Fe; maternal grandparents: Bobby "Papa" & Joyce "Granny" Floyd of Santa Fe; paternal grandmother: Betty "BeBe" Blackburn of Columbia; aunts: Polly Floyd, Kaye Pitts; nephew: Kaiden Thomas Blackburn; very special first cousins: Bobby Thigpen, Emily Thigpen, Ben (Jerusha) Pitts, Brooke (Chuck) Nixon; and special friend: Kazlyn Bastone. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Mathew T. Blackburn, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorial donations be made to Eli Thomas Blackburn's memorial fund at any branch of Community First Bank & Trust.
