Lucretia T. Burns, age 93, a resident of Columbia, Tennessee passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd at 1pm in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 11am until the 1pm service hour at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date in Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena, Arakansas. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. She was born in Phillips County, Arkansas at Wabash on November 24, 1921 to the late Allen McKenzie Toney Sr. and Bertha Eads Toney on Thanksgiving Day. Lucretia attended school in Shelby County, Tennessee. She graduated from Whitehaven High School in 1939, and then attended Memphis State University. She was married to the late Jerry L. Burns of Forrest City, Arkansas on May 26, 1943 for 57 years. While growing up, Lucretia spent many terms staying with her loving great aunts: Miss Lida Toney, Miss Camilla W. Toney, and Mrs. Norbourne Jones (Mary Alice Toney) of Memphis and Oakville, TN. She lived in Columbia, Tennessee since 1966 to the present. Lucretia dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church, and was very loving toward her church family. She was a life member of the United Methodist Church. She completed a needle point kneelers at church. She belonged to the Thomas McKissick Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to play bridge and was an accomplished seamstress and knitter. She was also a member of the Town and Country Garden Club; the Maury County APTA; the James K. Polk Auxiliary; and the Hospital Auxiliary. Lucretia is survived by two sons: Martin (Kathy) Burns of Whites Creek, Tennessee; and Allen Burns of Arab, Alabama; three grandchildren, Lida Elizabeth Burns, Christie Lynn Bearden, and Leslie Marie (Josh) England; and one Great Grandchild, Olivia Christine. Along with her husband Jerry L. Burns and her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers Allen McKenzie Toney, Jr. and Charles Edgar Toney.
