Sarah Allen

Mrs. Sarah J. Allen, age 79, wife of Julian M. Allen, Sr., and a resident of Sam Johnson Road in Columbia, passed away Monday morning, October 20, 2014 at her residence. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 3:00 PM in the Garden of Freedom at Maury Memorial Gardens, adjacent to the funeral home. The family will also receive friends for visitation on Wednesday from 1:00 PM until the service hour at 3:00. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born on January 3, 1935, Sarah grew up in Whistler, Alabama and was the daughter of the late Henry George and Cornelia Griffin Scanlan. She was of the Baptist faith and attended West Ellisville Baptist Church and Sandhill Baptist Church in Mississippi. She was a housewife and a mother of five, and she raised all five children on a farm. She also worked in retail throughout her life, and she enjoyed playing the piano. In addition to her husband Julian of 63 years, she is survived by her sons: Julian Myrick "Rick" Allen, Jr., Gregory Michael "Greg" Allen; daughters: Janet Bryant, Julie Smith, Kay Steven; brothers: George Scanlan, Bill Scanlan; sisters: Henrietta Phillips, Dorothy Ann Street, Mary Cleveland; sixteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Mack Scanlan. Pallbearers will be: Andrew Bryant, Lynn Steven, Nathan Allen, Jaron Allen, Eric Allen, Benjamin Allen, and Joey Allen.
