Robert Burton Harris, Sr.

Mr. Robert Burton Harris, Sr., age 81, resident of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Life Care Center, Hope Place, in Centerville. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Mapleview Cemetery in Smyrna, Tennessee with Brother Jerry Lee Bates officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, October 16, 2014 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born in Smyrna, Tennessee on December 24, 1932, Robert was the son of the late James Joseph Harris and the late Mary Viola Coleman Harris. He was a foreman pressman for 37 years at Check Printers and a member of the Church of Christ. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife: Elsie Harris of Columbia; one son: Robert Burton "Buddy" (Sandra) Harris, Jr. of LaVergne; one step-son: Layton S. (Judy) Oliver of Nashville; one step-daughter: Janice Gail Oliver of Columbia; two grandchildren: Staff Sergeant Elizabeth Louise Harris USMC and Corporal Robert Lance Harris USMC; six step grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren; and one niece: Wanda Biles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother: Buford Harris; two step-sons: Thomas Oliver and Jack Oliver, as well as seven half-brothers and five half-sisters. Pallbearers will be his many friends. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present employees of Check Printers, Enis Warf, and Basil Nugent. The family wishes to especially thank the staff at Hope Place of Life Care Center in Centerville.
