Barbara Hansen

September 7, 1939 - October 6, 2014

Mrs. Barbara Hansen, age 75, wife of Jim Hansen, devoted Sweet Adelines International Chorus Member, and a resident of Columbia, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 8PM at Heritage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, one hour prior to the service from 7-8PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born on September 7, 1939 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Barbara was the daughter of the late Hollis Robert and Florence Kumler Smith. She worked the majority of her life in pediatrics as a registered nurse. She spent time in Atlanta, Georgia in home healthcare, and about ten years on the night shift in the NICU in Louisiana. Barbara was very passionate and devoted to the Sweet Adelines International Organization. Sweet Adelines is a women's organization promoting 4 part accapella harmony, barbershop style. It is one of the world's largest singing organizations for women. She was very active with Sweet Adelines International, singing for 38 years in numerous choruses including: Royal Palm Chorus, Song of Atlanta Chorus, Mississippi Coast Chorus, Sound of the Bay Chorus, and most recently, Metro Nashville Chorus. Barbara served many important roles in Sweet Adelines International such as on the Regional Board, Regional Management, Regent, Director of Musical Activities, and Education Coordinator. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son: Joseph (Amanda Larkin) Kirby; daughter: Cheri Thompson; brothers: Bob (Judy) Smith, Brad (Patty) Smith, Bruce Smith; and one grandchild: Riley Larkin Kirby.
