Zachary Zach "Smokey" Jewell

Zachary Tyler "Smokey" Jewell, age 22, a resident of Columbia, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at his residence. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 6PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Derek Hunter officiating. The family will also visit with friends on Tuesday two hours prior to the service from 4-6 PM. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A native of Columbia, Zach was born on December 23, 1991 and was the son of Holly and James David Barnett. He attended Spring Hill High School where he played the tuba in the band and was very active in Jr. ROTC and the Drama Club. He had a heart of gold and enjoyed helping others. You could often find him volunteering. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics and took a mission trip to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. He helped start up and attended Restoration Community Church, which is held at Spring Hill High School. Zach enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a leader among his friends. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his brother: Steven (Beth) Barnett of Columbia; sisters: Aliceson Barnett (Andrew Layne) of Franklin, Brittany (Chad) Hunt of Murfreesboro, Kayla Barnett of Columbia, Faith Barnett of Columbia; grandparents: Walter & Bernice Jewell of Columbia; grandfather: Wendell Mencer of Nevada; great-grandfather: Walter Jewell, Sr. of Columbia; great-grandmother: Louise Dolan of Tuscaloosa, AL; aunts: Heather Bowen of Columbia, Rosemary (Ronnie) Kelly of Columbia; uncle: Charlie (Trudy) Barnett of Columbia; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandmother: Bertie Barnett; great-grandmother: Elaine Jewell; great-grandmother: Ruth Mencer; great-grandfather: Eddie Dolan; and uncle: Wendell Bowen. Those serving as honorary pallbearers are: Ben Iglesias, Steven Sturgill, Cody Sturgill, BJ Cates, Jacob Cates, Josh Crabtree, Eric Coatnour, Chad Hunt, and Andrew Layne.
