Rev. Albert Vernon Pope, age 86, and a resident of Mockingbird Drive in Columbia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 2nd at 2:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Atkisson officiating with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin Post 19. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends on Saturday, March 1st from 5-8 PM at Heritage Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service on Sunday. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Born in Ardmore, TN on May 8, 1927 Albert was the son of the late Albert Frank Pope and the late Cordie Rolin Pope. He was married to the late Lillian Pope, the love of his life, for 63years. She preceded him in death in August of 2010. He served in the army, was an earthly Father of five children, an Evangelist, and was a pastor at Trinity Mountain Church for five years. He later founded the Pentecostal Church of Pulaski and served as Pastor for 40 years. He also worked at Union Carbide to provide for his family. As Rev. Pope said himself, "He would put on his white shirt, suit, and tie and go to the hospital or wherever he was needed." He showed that he was such a godly man by spending many days in his office studying God's word. All who knew Rev. Pope will truly miss him. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son: Terry Pope of Columbia; daughters: Patsy (Jerry) Grimmett of Columbia and Sandra (Joe) Gilbert of Pulaski; brother: Allen Pope of Ardmore, TN; sisters: Gretchel Wales of Columbia, Barbara Kelley of Columbia, Jewel Walker of Columbia, and Shelby Owens of Culleoka; grandchildren: Jonathan Pope, Becky Willoughby, Kim Holly, Bruce Gilbert, and Jeremy Pope; 6 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Along with his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his oldest son: Jerry Pope; an infant daughter: Brenda Pope; brothers: Joe Pope and Dan Pope; sisters: Earline Gordon and Elizabeth Teeples; and grandson: Joey Gilbert. Pallbearers will be Shane Willoughby, Jonathan Pope, Jeremy Pope, Johnny Cline, Bruce Gilbert, Danny Gordon, and Carl Holly. Honorary pallbearers will be the retirees of Union Carbide and all surrounding Pentecostal preachers.
