Mr. William Thomas "Tommy" Spicer, age 62 of Columbia, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 at Wyndridge Nursing & Rehab Center in Crossville, Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, July 12, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. David Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Tennessee National Guard. The family will visit with friends on Thursday, July 11th from 4-8pm at the funeral home, and again on Friday from 10:00 AM until the service hour. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family and is in charge of arrangements. Tommy was born February 28, 1951 in Erin, TN and was the son of George Douglas and Maggie Spicer. He began a 38 1/2 year career of service by enlisting in the United States Army in September of 1968. He served in Vietnam for 18 months, and was awarded two Bronze Service Stars. He left active military service in 1986 and joined the National Guard as a Heavy Wheel Mechanic. He retired from service completely on October 31, 2007. He was a founding member of the Maury County Bass Anglers and was an avid fisherman. His fishing stories were guaranteed to be the greatest ones told. When he wasn't near the water, he still enjoyed being somewhere outside. Tommy was a huge NASCAR fan and enjoyed wresting as well. Although he deeply loved his family and friends, it is also known he had a passion for his two Chihuahuas: PeeWee & Sweet Pea. Tommy is survived by his wife: Katherine Ann Spicer of Columbia; a son: William Douglas Spicer of Columbia; daughters: Tina Ann McDonald of Columbia, Lori Wynette Helders of Columbia, and Terri Danielle Velasquez of LaVergne; 8 grandchildren: MaKayla Ann McDonald, Tanner Collins McDonald, Brianna Estrada, Jada Paige Holcomb, Juan Estrada, Sofia Estrada, Tristan Spicer, and Oliver George Helders; and 2 great-grandchildren: Isabella Vargas and Kayliam Foxx. He was preceded in death by his parents: George Douglas and Maggie Spicer, a sister: Beulah Spicer, and a great-grandchild: Liam Foxx. Pallbearers will include D.J. Scroggins, Philip Zuniga, William McClain, Freddy Kelsey, James Fitzgerald, and Tanner McDonald. Honorary pallbearers will be member of the Maury County Bass Anglers and the Tennessee National Guard. The family wishes to extend special recognition and gratitude to Williamson Medical Center, Kendred Hospital, Wyndridge Nursing and Rehab Center, Cumberland Medical Center ICU, and the staff of Dr. Doug Kennedy for the excellent, compassionate care provided to their family.
