Roxie M. Bankert

August 15, 1943 - May 6, 2012

Ms. Roxie Bankert, age 68 of Chapman Ln in Columbia, died Sunday morning, May 6, 2012 at her residence. Memorial services will be celebrated on Saturday, May 12 at 3:00 PM from the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Bro. Eddie Rogers officiating. Visitation will be held from 1pm until the service hour at 3pm. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Roxie was born on August 15, 1943 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and graduated from Madison Heights (MI) High School where she was a star basketball player, and captain of the synchronized swim team. Although she spent her working career of 27 years with General Motors, Roxie's life was far more diverse. She loved watching women's basketball, especially the Lady Vols. When she wasn't watching sports, she spent as much time as possible outside. She loved being outdoors near, or in, water, or getting her hands dirty in the garden and landscaping around her home. She will be remembered as fearless, being willing "to try anything once." As much as she enjoyed her hobbies, Roxie had a passion and love for others, especially children. She served as a leader and mentor to Boy Scouts Pack 251, encouraging and leading the boys. Understanding the importance of friendly competition, Roxie even built her own Pinewood Derby cars to race against the boys. Those who loved her referred to her as "Big Grandma." Roxie is survived by her dear friend, Gloria Wright of Columbia; a sister: Patsy Bankert; and a niece: Vicky; as well as a half-brother and half-sister: Chuck and Gloria. Also, a host of friends and relatives. You may share condolences with the family at the top of this page.
