Sammie Donald Logue, Sr.

March 18, 1932 - April 21, 2011

Mr. Sammie Donald Logue, Sr., 79, retired owner of Logue Roofing, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 21, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. John Vaughn and long-time friend Keith Baker officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends on Sunday, April 24, 2011 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family and in charge of the arrangements. Born and reared in Maury County, Mr. Logue was the son of the late Charlie Bumpus and Mary Eugenia (Foster) Logue. He was a 1950 graduate of Columbia Central High School and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Logue, whose father served in the US Army, World War II, and great-grandfather in the War Between the States, CSA, felt it his duty and honor to serve our beloved United States during the Korean Conflict, enlisting in the U. S. Army. Mr. Logue attended Business College while serving his country. Mr. Logue was well known in our community as the owner of Logue Roofing Company from which he retired, founder/owner of a redi-mix concrete company, owner of the former Plaza Motors, realtor, farmer, and life-long entrepreneur. He was a businessman in the true sense of the word and had many interests in life: he was an early member of the Exchange Club, American Legion Post 19, VFW, and a man with a passion for golf prior to a disabling accident in 2000. Mr. Logue was described by contemporaries as a good businessman who was honest, and fair, and who truly cared. Mr. Logue loved his children and demanded they always strive to be the best they could be. He often told them stories about his earlier years growing up in the communities of Enterprise and Screamer, and the joys of a slower-paced time in life. His children fondly remember his sharing remembrances of how they had to ride a mule through several feet of snow to and from school, as he described the struggles of country life following the Great Depression. Many a friend have shared a cup of coffee with Mr. Logue at different restaurants in Columbia, as he would often meet with his friends to chew the daily issues, news and events. He loved Maury County, and his caring ways will be missed by his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Mr. Logue is survived by his children, Rebecca (Becky) Logue and Don Logue, both of Maury County; his sister, Judy Garland Logue, Columbia; five step-children: Nena Rainey Camp, TX, James (Butch) M. (Karen) Rainey, PA; Jean Burks Miles and Judy Burks Haines of Tuscaloosa, and Edward E. Burks, Memphis; grandchildren Hunter Price Logue, Jamie Miles (Peter) Dennison, Sunny Day Haines, Haley Brooks Miles, Kevin Michael Camp, and Lindsay Meredith Camp, and one great-grandchild, Jacob Dennison. Mr. Logue is also survived by his Aunt, Melba Foster Cheek of Florida, and several cousins he held so close to his heart. In addition to his parents, Mr. Logue was preceded in death by two wives: Beryl Ward Rainey Logue who passed away in 1967, and Juanita Goff Burks Logue who passed away in 1996. Pallbearers will be Mr. John Church, Mr. Jerry Kennedy, Mr. Glen Neathery, Mr. Jim Carrigan, Mr. Calvin Cheek, Mr. K. L. Osteen, Mr. Tommy Logue, Mr. Mike Burns, Mr. Jim Poling, and Captain Jimmy Tennyson. Honorary Pallbearers are Mr. Logues grandson, Hunter Logue, his cousins, Jean Sis Logue, Mr. Leroy Blackie Norman, Billy Kennedy, Wayne Kennedy and fellow members of the CHS Class of 1950. Mr. Logues children wish to offer a special thank you to his physicians, and to the Emergency staff, nurses and physicians at Maury Regional Medical Center for the care, patience, and respect given in caring for their father. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.heritage-fhcs.com. It is the familys wish that memorials be made to the Columbia Central High School Baseball program or the Columbia Academy Athletics Program.
