Mr. Clovis Whitfield "Whit" Foster, Sr., 92, a resident of Pulaski Highway in the Stiversville Community, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at his home. Funeral Services for Mr. Foster will be conducted Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Stiversville Church of Christ with Bro. Ricky Clay and Dr. Barry Farris officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday, June 10, 2008 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born in Maury County to the late Walter Young and Cordie Mai Barnett Foster, he rode a speckled pony to and from school. He finished the ninth grade and helped his family make a living selling cantaloupe and tomatoes by horse and wagon. On May 10, 1941, he married his sweetheart and best friend, Mary Pearl Hayes Foster. Together they were blessed with two children. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother, and provider for his family. The church was a huge part of his live. He became a Christian by baptism in a nearby creek in the Stiversville Community. He was an active member of Stiversville Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. As a deacon, he served the church as a song leader, visited many people, and worked in and around the church building. In later years, he became known as the man that sat at the church and waved . Mr. Foster, known to his friends as Whit , loved people, especially children, and the church. He was a joker, a cut-up, always full of entertainment, and the life of every event. He loved birthdays, the grandchildrens baseball games, golf, fishing, and was a coach for the Athensdale Mens Softball League for many years. He supported Culleoka School, and the schools sports, where he had his own special seat saved for him outside the concession stand to watch the sports. He played in the Ole Timers ballgames every year until he lost his health. His first job outside the home, he worked for the State Highway Department. He helped build Highway 31, known as the Pulaski Highway. He also worked at Taylors Furniture store as a salesman. In 1953, he began working for Union Carbide, where he worked as a miller. He enjoyed his job and made many dear friends during these years. In 1978, he retired with 25 years of service. After retirement, he went to the Columbia Mall every Friday and Saturday to meet with friends. In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by a son, Clovis (Betty) Foster, Jr. and a daughter, Glenna Ruth (Bobby) Thurman; grandchildren, Celia (Kenneth) Owens, Randy (April) Thurman, Clovis Skip (Tracey) Foster, III, Caroline (Greg) McNeese, Glen (Colleen) Thurman; great-grandchildren, Cassie (Brent) McCandless, Hayley Foster, Jordan McNeese, Justin McNeese, Tanner Thurman, Cody Thurman, Amanda (Josh) Rosen; four great-great grandchildren, Jackson and Cayden McCandless, Chandler and McKenzie Ruth Rosen; three step great-grandchildren, Breanna Senter, Kandance Blackwell, and Kayla Cadrin ; a sister, Inez (J. B.) Goldman; a brother-in-law, Jack (Wilma) Hayes. Several nieces and nephews. Special caregivers, Mary Sue (Susie) Thomason, Sara Mitchell, Peggy Sullivan, and Rena (Sissy) Isabell. He was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Clint Owens, and a sister, Mai Lee Burns. Active pallbearers will be Clovis Skip Foster, III, Randy Thurman, Glen Thurman, Kenneth Owens, Greg McNeese, Cody Thurman, Justin McNeese, Tanner Thurman, Mike Carter, and Larry Turner. Honorary pallbearers are friends at the Columbia Mall, elders and deacons of Stiversville Church of Christ, Culleoka Ole Timers, and J. O. Thurman. Special thanks to the staff and nurses of Hospice. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Highland Rim, Highland Church of Christ, and Stiversville Church of Christ. If Mr. Foster could leave you with one last message, he would say, Live your life so that when you die, youre the one smiling, and everyone around you is crying .
