Mr. Herbert Douglas Burgett, Sr., age 89, husband of Rebecca Westmoreland Burgett, and a resident of Columbia passed away Friday, February 8, 2013 at NHC- Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Bro. Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Oak Cemetery in Lewisburg. The family will visit with friends on Monday from 11:00 AM until the service hour at 1 PM. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family and in charge of arrangements. Mr. Burgett was born on August 22, 1923 in Lincoln County and was the son of the late John David Cecil and Elma Dee Crabtree Burgett. Doug was a man of faith, and a Christian for over 65 years. He worshipped with the Graymere Church of Christ in Columbia, and was a member of the Lewisburg Rotary Club for many years as well and a graduate of Cornersville High School. Doug served our country in the United States Army from January 30, 1943 until October 19, 1945 during WWII. His tour of duty took him to North Africa, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. He made three invasions with the 45th Infantry Division- Salerno, Anzio, and Southern France. At the end of the war, he had logged 500 days of combat. He was a lifetime member of the 45th Infantry Division Association and also a member of the American Legion. He married the former Rebecca Westmoreland on Feb 16, 1947, and his death comes one week prior to their 67th wedding anniversary. Mr. Burgett attended Columbia Business College and received a diploma and an achievement award from American Savings and Loan Institute and served as president of Nashville Chapter 130. He retired after thirty-two years of service as loan officer and vice president for First Federal Savings and Loan in Lewisburg. He attended the school for executive development at the University of Georgia College of Business Administration and served on the Board for Selective Service in the 60s. He also served on the board of directors of First Federal Savings and Loan of Lewisburg for sixteen years. In addition to his wife: Rebecca Westmoreland Burgett of Columbia, he is survived by two daughters: Dona Carnahan (Howard Gower) and Diane (Evan) Allen, both of Columbia; a son: Herbert Douglas (Sheila) Burgett, Jr. of Moss Point, MS; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; son-in-law: CH (CPT) Trey Vaughn of Ft. Campbell, KY; and a brother-in-law: James (Nema) Westmoreland of Oklahoma City, OK. Mr. Burgett was preceded in death by his parents: John David Cecil & Elma Dee Burgett; a daughter: Elizabeth Dawn Vaughn; 3 brothers: J.C. Burgett Sr, Sloan Burgett, and Phil Burgett; and a sister: Hazel Chapman. Pallbearers will be John Carnahan, Eric Carnahan, Joey Burgett, Jesse Burgett, Evan Allen Jr., and Trey Vaughn. Honorary Pallbearers will be Howard Coker, Larry Ross, Dave Peterson, Bill Marsh, Robin Jack, and Dr. Daniel Birchmore. The family wishes to extend a special "thank you" to the nurses and staff of NHC-Hillview, Dr. Cummins Couch, Nurse Practitioner Karen Perry, and the entire staff of Hospice Compassus.
