Glenda Mae Atkinson Smith, 73, formerly of Riverside, and a resident of Sunnymeade Drive went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Maury Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Services for Mrs. Smith will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. David Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday, April 6, 2010 from 4:00 " 8:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born in Blytheville, Arkansas, she is the daughter of the late James and Thelma Jones Atkinson. As the oldest of eleven children, she learned to mother at an early age. In January of 1959, she married Richard G. Smith, Sr. and together they raised three wonderful children. Their home was full of love; love for each other, and love for the Lord. Mrs. Smith was a former affiliate of Roses Department Store, but her most cherished work was a homemaker for her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, as well as a loving, caring, and Christian mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Smith loved people and she loved being around people, especially friends of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid gardener, and her gardens stood out with vibrant color and beauty. Mrs. Smith enjoyed puzzles, cooking, decorative painting, and crafts. She was an excellent seamstress and crocheter. Mrs. Smith had a servants heart; service above self . She was a professional grandmother, and loved having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in her home. Mrs. Smith was a member of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, daughters, Kathy (Jim) Walker and Pam (Lee) Rummage, both of Columbia; son, Richard G. Rick (Donna) Smith, Jr. of Columbia; her grandchildren; David Smith, U. S. Navy, stationed in San Diego, CA, Mary Margaret Smith, Kristin (Mark) Owens, Matt Rummage, Taylor Rummage, and Megan Rummage, all of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Cole and Maci Owens of Columbia; sisters, Norma (Walter) Hinton of Mechanicsville, VA, Tressia (Rick) Tucker of Blytheville, AR, Debra Atkinson of Blytheville, AR; brothers, Jerry Atkinson of Steele, MO, Larry (Mary) Atkinson of Fort Worth, TX, Billy Atkinson of Osceola, AR, Alvin (Janie) Atkinson of Osceola, AR, Ronald (Peggy) Atkinson of Vernon, AL, Edward (Glenda) Atkinson of Blytheville, AR; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Mac Atkinson. Pallbearers will be David Smith, Matt Rummage, Taylor Rummage, Gene Rummage, Mark Blackwood, Jerry Bytwerk, Ed Van Maren, and Sami Naddy. Honorary Guests will be Tammy Blackwood, Karen Bytwerk, Anna Van Maren, Linda and Billy House, Frankie and Dan Cutright, Ruth and Roy McPherson, Mildred and Johnny Brown, Elmer and Charlotte Rummage, Micki Gaskill, Gloria Roberts, Daoud and Robin Abudiab, Terrisa Riggins, Dr. Doug Kennedy and staff, Dr. Amit Choski, Sami Naddy, Mike Bullock, Margaret Beard. The family extends special thanks to Columbia Staff of Home Health Care of Middle Tennessee, Doctors and nurses of Critical Care Unit of Maury Regional Medical Center, and Drivers and staff of Maury County Transportation Service.
