Jim Sloan

Mr. James R. Jim Sloan, age 83, well known business owner of Sloan Ford Lincoln in Columbia, Tennessee, passed away in his sleep at his residence on Hidden Lakes Circle following a short illness on Sunday, July 15, 2012. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Aleridge, Rev. Frank Smith, and Jim Yates officiating. Interment will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home and again on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral service. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family and in charge of the arrangements. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he was the son of the late James Akin Green Sloan and the late Pearl Cole Sloan. He graduated from East High School in Nashville and attended Vanderbilt University from 1947 - 1949. Prior to attending Vanderbilt University, he served as a member of the Tennessee State Guard from 1944 - 1946. He has been associated with Ford Motor Dealerships since 1953 with locations ranging from Florence, Alabama to Columbia, Tennessee. He has been the owner of Sloan Ford in Columbia since 1978. Throughout his career, he has received so many awards for numerous accomplishments that we could not list all of them. A few notable mentions include: Retailer of the year in 1977 awarded by the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters and the Tennessee Retail Merchants Association, numerous awards from the Kiwanis Club from his lengthy membership since 1979 which include the Hixson Award and the Legion of Honor, the coveted Presidents Award for general excellence from Ford Motor Co was awarded to him several times as well as numerous times being awarded Ford Partners in Quality. Some of his other accomplishments include: he was the youngest branch manager of Associates Capitol in Sheffield, Alabama, his involvement with the Work Force Development, membership with Maury Alliance, faithfully serving his church as a Sunday School Teacher in the Whitney-Ayers Sunday School Class and serving on the board of trustees, member of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Sons of American Revolution, and his involvement in the founding of several banks and serving on the board of directors of both Community First Bank & Trust and Heritage Bank & Trust in Columbia. He was a history buff and enjoyed studying family history and genealogy. He was a man of great integrity and honesty living his life by the golden rule. He loved his family and enjoyed working outdoors in his lawn cutting the grass. His sweet presence and role model and will be greatly missed by his family and the residents of Maury County, Tennessee. He left behind to cherish his memory three sons: Riley Dee (Karen) Sloan, of Columbia, TN, James Lee (Betty Ann) Sloan of Columbia, TN and Richard Harrison Sloan of Augusta, GA; six daughters: Anita Marie Edenfield of Moultrie, GA, Teresa Lynne (Eddie) Fletcher of Leesburg, GA, Susan Karen (John) Williams of Augusta, GA, Cynthia Cecille (Richard) Russell of Crawfordville, FL, Carol Francis (Wallace) Hill of Madison, FL and Patricia Louise (David) Hester of Henderson, TN, twenty-five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by Wilda B. Sloan, the mother of his children and June S. Sloan, wife of 28 years. Pallbearers will include: his three son-in-laws: John Williams, Eddie Fletcher and Richard Russell; and Doug Vaughn, Mark Plunkett, Ray Williams, Billy Graham, Tom Glenn, Jules Ferland, and Chuck Madison. Honorary Pallbearers will include: Whitney-Ayers Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church, members of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia, all employees of Sloan Ford, and the Tennessee Work Force Development Board.
