Bill Harris

William Monroe “Bill” Harris, age 91, longtime farmer of Greasy Branch Road in the Glendale Community died Monday, October 21, 2019 at NHC Columbia surrounded by his family.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 25th at 2pm at Heritage Funeral Home with Randy Jones, Alex Jones, and Winfred Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Mount Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 4-8pm and again on Friday from 1-2pm at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born June 12, 1928, in Maury County, he was the son of the late Byron Franklin Harris and the late Mary Lou Dillehay Harris. On August 12, 1956, he married Elaine Eddlemon Harris who preceded him in death September 13, 1991. He was a 1946 graduate of Culleoka High School. He was store manager of Maury Farmers Co-op for 33 years and farmed since he was a young boy. He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church at Culleoka.

He received the FFA chapter farmer degree in 1944, state farmer degree in 1945 and awarded the American Farmer degree in October 1947 in Kansas City, MO which was the highest award given by FFA. He was the first Tennessean to receive this award. In 2013 he received the Gold Star Farmer of the Year Award from the Kiwanis Club of Columbia in recognition of a lifetime of dedication to agriculture.

Survivors include his daughters, Cindy (Winfred) Baker of Water Valley and Melissa (Randy) Jones of Glendale; grandchildren Alex (Samantha) Jones of Glendale, Will (Kate) Baker of Crestwood, Kentucky, Jessica (Blake) Daniels of Glendale and Robert Baker of Athens, Ohio. Great Grandchildren Mason Daniels, Jhett Daniels, Anderson Baker, and Cecil Daniels.

Active pallbearers will be Alex Jones, Will Baker, Blake Daniels, Robert Baker, Jimmy Williams, Mike Looper, Mike Vaughn and Donnie Chapman. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present employees of the Maury Farmers Co-op and members of Central Presbyterian Church.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at NHC Columbia for his excellent care and also to those at Caris Healthcare.
