Carl M. Johnson

Mr. Carl M. Johnson, age 89, a resident of Columbia, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2019 at NHC-Maury Regional Transitional Care Center.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Swango officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM and again on Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on January 13, 1930 in Columbia, Carl was the son of the late Cal Johnson and the late Mamie Ladd Johnson Blackburn. Carl attended Andrews School, Highland Park, Whitthorne Middle, and graduated from Central High School in 1948. He worked at Briggs Manufacturing Car Plant in Detroit for one year before being drafted into the Army. His basic training was at Fort Belvoir, VA. He was sent to Korea in January of 1952. There he was wounded on October 25, 1952 and spent nine months in the hospital. He received a Purple Heart for his service. When Carl returned home, he attended Columbia Business College for a Junior Accountant course. He did payroll at the Carbon Plant, East Plant for Gilmore and Olson Construction. Carl worked construction for Daniels and Dunn Brothers, for TVA maps and surveys, and on construction of the Columbia Dam. He farmed on the side, raising tobacco and cows. Carl loved to fish, shoot pool at Hop Dorris’s Pool Hall, and to eat at McDonalds. He was a member of Loyal Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children: Lora (Jeff) Richards of Columbia, Dean (Cheryl) Johnson of Columbia, grandchildren: Karli (Tyler) Cole, Brian Dean Johnson, and Sarah Beth Johnson all of Columbia; and nieces: Lena Jane Ferguson and Peggy (Charlie) Hardaway.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, Doris Johnson in 2008, and sister, Louise Aldridge.

Pallbearers will be: Tyler Cole, Brian Johnson, Mark Richards, Dwight Groves, Tom Halter, and Zach Henson.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and CNAs at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care Center for their care and kindness.
