Dewey Skillington

Mr. Charles Dewey Skillington, age 96, a resident of Columbia, formerly of Snow Creek Road in Santa Fe, passed away Saturday evening, May 16, 2020 at Life Care Center.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 1PM at Santa Fe Cemetery with Sherry Ladd and Keith Baker officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. A visitation will also be held on Thursday from 10AM-12PM at Heritage Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on September 25, 1923 on the family farm in Santa Fe, Dewey was the son of the late Charlie Skillington and the late Lois Woody Skillington. He was a 1942 graduate of Santa Fe High School and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked and retired from Monsanto Chemical Company in Columbia. Dewey was a member of the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 and the 40 & 8 and received the Outstanding Legionnaire Award in 2000. In his younger days, he was an avid fisherman and was well known in the Santa Fe area for his ability to provide a wonderful fish fry. A great sense of humor, he was a very witty man who often played jokes and pranks on others. He enjoyed traveling and taking trips with his family. Dewey was a lifelong member of Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for several years.

He is survived by his sons: Terry (Deborah) Skillington of Columbia, Gerry (Pam) Skillington of Athens, AL, Ricky (Kay) Skillington of Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren; brother, David Skillington of Santa Fe; sister, Faye Skillington Bohannon of Santa Fe; and two special nieces: Carolyn Skelley and Susan Toungette.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Skelley Skillington in 1974; daughter, Mittie Elizabeth Skillington; brothers: John Robert Skillington, Joe Frank Skillington; and sisters: Rachel Frazier, Ann Skillington and Ruth Skillington.

Pallbearers will be: Charlie Skillington, Travis Hann, Larry Tarkington, Jimmy Humphrey, Brian White, Allen Fox, Chad Fox and Duck Sharp. Honorary pallbearers will include: James Skillington, Carolyn Skelley and Susan Toungette.
