Born on February 25, 1933, in St. Louis, Missouri, Doris was the daughter of the late James B. Rayfield and the late Joyce McMurry Rayfield. Doris’s first job, directly out of high school, was at Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Company where she worked in the lab and gave tours of the facility. She married W. Gordon Beck on July 3, 1954, and together they had three children. Beginning in May of 1969, she worked alongside her husband as the office manager at Edward D. Jones & Co. office in Columbia. She and Gordon enjoyed traveling and saw much of the world together; he preceded her in death on June 19, 2011. Doris was a longtime member of Jackson Heights Church of Christ where she kept the nursery class for several decades. She was a dedicated helper at the Kiwanis yard sale every year and was awarded the Sunshine Award for her devoted efforts. An excellent seamstress, Doris sewed many of her children’s clothes and was known for the numerous Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls she made for the expectant mothers at her church and the countless number of afghans she crocheted for her children, grandchildren, and friends. In her later years, Doris loved getting together with her coffee group at McDonalds every afternoon. Amongst her many hobbies, she especially loved gardening and always kept an immaculate yard and continued to mow on her zero-turn lawnmower and with a push mower up into her 80’s. Doris never met a stranger and was known for her beautiful smile and eternally optimistic personality. Above all, she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Dwaine (Debbie) Beck of Columbia, TN, Susan (Wayne) Petty of Athens, AL, Sandra (Stephen) Lovell of Athens, AL, brother, David (Jan) Rayfield of Springfield, MO, grandchildren, Emily Petty, Lisa (Micah) Joy, Cullen (Caryn) Lovell, Nick (Jessica) Beck, Valarie (Roger) Haislep, Geoffrey (Megan) Beck, April (Joseph) Mahafza, and twelve great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Don Rayfield, and sister-in-law, Betty Rayfield.
Pallbearers will be Nick Beck, Geoffrey Beck, Stephen Lovell, Roger Haislep, Joseph Mahafza, and Micah Joy.
