She was born on January 24, 1929, to the late Hubert Austin Brown and the late Rena Tice Brown from Culleoka. On October 23, 1947, she married James Hubbell who preceded her in death on November 6, 2018. She was Valedictorian of her 1947 graduating class at Culleoka High School, winning a Good Scholar Award and excelling in Math. Doris loved being a homemaker, keeping an immaculate house and growing flowers. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her chocolate pies which were requested constantly and eaten quickly. Her pies were sent to those who were sick or in a time of bereavement.
She was an excellent seamstress and sewed constantly for herself and her three daughters. She loved going to Osborne’s Cloth Shop and Hancock Fabrics and spending hours looking at fabrics and choosing the perfect patterns. She also enjoyed crocheting and made many beautiful doilies.
After graduating from high school and marrying she worked for a time in the office at McClellan’s and later at Anderson Bros. and Foster. Then after years of being a homemaker she returned to working outside of the home at JC Penney and retired from there in 1995. She was a longtime member of Highland Church of Christ and for years enjoyed being on food committees and carrying meals to those in need.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Debbie (John) Van Atta of Bradyville and Sherry (Grant) Hitt of Brentwood; eight grandchildren, Dana (Jerry) Hollingsworth, Brian (Jessica) Clark, Amy (Nicole) Morris-Clark, Lesley (Andrew) Heiland, Lauren (Bert) McMahan, Lisa (Freddie) Tong, Brandon (Rebecca) Hitt, and Caycee (Nathan) Rose; ten great grandchildren; and expecting two more.
In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Clark; sisters, Lois Hickman and Pearline McAnally; and her brother, Ed Brown.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
