Doris Evelyn Walker

July 26, 1927 — January 31, 2020

Doris Evelyn Walker, age 92, a resident of Columbia, previously of Detroit, Michigan, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at Magnolia Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Christie Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens. A visitation will also be held on Saturday from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

A family jewel and one of a kind, Doris, was born in Bessemer, Alabama on July 26, 1927 and was the daughter of late John Henry and Carrie Haygood. She was the eldest of nine children. Doris attended the Brighton School Systems. She later met and married the love of her life Theoplis Walker, who preceded her in death. They moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1950 and to this union three children were born.

Doris accepted Christ at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church in Brighton, Alabama. She kept Christ a big part of her life. She continued her Christian education attending Israel Baptist Church for numerous years and later joined her family as a member of New Grace Missionary Baptist Church.

Doris worked for many years at the drapery store in Hamtramck, MI. She loved and adored her husband, talking to, loving and caring for people, her ole school music, her puppies, her family and especially her grandkids! She was mother to many, The Matriarch to 7Mile Road….. 18925 Cardoni was home to anybody that needed help. She gave love and much was given in return. Family gatherings were a highlight in her life. Everybody knew before it was over “Family Reunion” would be the theme song and you knew just what to do. Doris was a talker and Thee would always tell her, “Woman you will talk to a tree” and that she would. She gave love, shared wisdom, taught morals and was Mom and Grandma to so many.

She leaves to cherish her memory Sons: Donald, Ronald (Brenda), Marcelle, Martez, Braden and Danilo Walker; Daughter Cheryl Walker; Sisters: Edna Williams, Bernice Chambers, Gwendolyn Gipbson, and Norma (Curly Mack) Lewis; Brother Audrey Haygood; Grandchildren: Andre (LeighAnn) Walker, Darryl (Bethany) Walker, Donna Lighty, Ralan Glover, Danielle Walker, Rachel Walker and Erica Walker. A host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends also survive.

Her sisters Johnnie Mae and Eloise, her brother John Henry Jr. all preceded her in death.
