Dorothy "Dot" Ann Whiteside

February 15, 1927 — April 23, 2019

Dorothy “Dot” Langsdon Whiteside, age 92, a lifelong resident of Columbia passed away April 23, 2019 at the home of her daughter after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services for Dot will be Saturday, April 27 th at 11AM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home in Columbia with burial to follow at Polk Memorial Gardens. Russ Adcox will officiate. The family will visit with friends from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday April 26 th and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on February 15, 1927 in Maury County, she was the oldest child of the late John Kinnard Langsdon, Sr. and Ree Coleman Langsdon. She attended Andrews Elementary School, Central High School, and David Lipscomb University.

Dot loved using her talents of knitting, crocheting, and tatting to make things to give to her friends and family. She has made and given away hundreds of knitted dishcloths. She loved teaching others her skills as well. She also loved games, especially Canasta and Bunco.

She and her husband, H.D, enjoyed 59 years of marriage before his passing in 2006. They enjoyed many years of camping on the Tennessee River and in Florida each winter. They traveled to many other states as well. After his death, she traveled with her daughter. Her most special vacation was to Hawaii with her daughter, son, and daughter- in -law in 2010. Her last vacation was to Gatlinburg in January with her daughter and two great granddaughters. Dot loved her church family at Maury Hills Church and was the oldest active member.

Dot is survived by: her daughter, Lynn Cetas of Columbia; son Richard (Janet) Whiteside of Killen, AL; brother: Bob (Annette) Langsdson of Nashville; grandsons: David (Becky) Lovell, Steven (Linda) Lovell, Rodney (Jennifer) Whiteside & Jeffrey (Susanna) Whiteside. Nine great grandchildren: Ashley Lovell, Amber Lovell, Mason Lovell, Carson Lovell, Allison Clark, Abby Whiteside, Sarah Whiteside, June Whiteside, Carver Whiteside and cousin, Phillip Lunn, special niece, Karen Paris & other nieces & nephews.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, H.D. Whiteside; brother, J.K. Langsdon, Jr. and two sisters, Gladys Alderson & Polly Tremaine, and special nephew, Jimmy Langsdon.

Active pallbearers will be Joe Purcell, Mike Purcell, Phillip Lunn, Bruce Langsdon, Wayne Paris, Zac Paris, and Tim Bortz (her dependable handyman & yardman).

A special thanks to Dr. Ruth Lamar & staff, Avalon Hospice & staff, and her two great granddaughters, Ashley & Amber Lovell for their devotion, love and care during the last several months of her life. Also, a special thanks to her family and friends for their many acts of kindness.

The family would suggest memorials be made to: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Maury Hills Church building fund, or women’s ministry, 101 Unity Drive, Columbia, TN 38401.
