Dorothy Clayton Staggs, age 75, a resident of Columbia, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Due to inclement weather, the family has chosen to change the funeral time. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11AM at Freedom Holy Temple in Hohenwald with Rev. Glen Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens in Hohenwald. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM at Heritage Funeral Home in Columbia and again on Thursday from 10-11AM at the church. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on March 11, 1943 in Lewis County, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Rack Clayton and the late Ruthie Mae King Clayton. She married Theo Staggs on May 12, 1995 and together they enjoyed taking rides in the country. Dorothy loved going to church at Freedom Holy Temple where she was a member. She previously worked as a cashier at Quik Mart 25 in Columbia before retiring. She enjoyed watching old westerns including Gun Smoke and Texas Ranger . Dorothy had a special interest in farm animals and enjoyed collecting cow figurines.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Kathleen (Daniel) Alderson of Santa Fe, Reita (Junior) Luna of Santa Fe, Stephen (Becky) Jones of Petersburg, Brian (Beth) Jones of Hampshire, Marsha (Michael) Brown of Columbia; step daughters: Carla Duke of Hohenwald, Tina Holt of Columbia; grandchildren: Brenda Schmitz, Kayla (Andrew) Lemay, Hope (Clint) Holden, Heather Hill, Brittany (Dylan) Hill, Elijah Jones, Austin Jones, Chelsea Brown, Cassidi Jones; step grandchildren: Jeremy Duke, Kevin Duke; great grandchildren: Jackson Schmitz, Aubree Schmitz, Hudson Schmitz, Brandon Sisk, Bentley Holden, Brayden Holden, and Waylon Birdwell; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Marvin, Tommy, Howard, Roscoe, Robert, Joe, and John E. Clayton; and sisters: Mary and Elizabeth Clayton.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Brown, Junior Luna, Danny Alderson, Austin Jones, Elijah Jones, Clint Holden, Christian Roberts, and Andrew Lemay.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and techs at NHC Columbia for all the love and care given to their mom while she was there, especially Christina, Noah, Allyson, and Talia also the nurses and staff at Maury Regional Medical Center.
