Elmer Holmes

Mr. Elmer John Holmes, Jr. age 90, a resident of Columbia, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

A private memorial service will be held on Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on September 13, 1929 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Elmer was the son of the late Elmer Holmes, Sr. and the late Mildred Lillian Voos Holmes. He served in the Coast Guard Reserve from 1942 through 1945 before enlisting the United States Navy where he was honorably discharged. He worked nearly twenty years as an Engineer for the Sears Distribution Center in Los Angeles, California before retiring in 1992. After retirement, he married Leonor Holland and together they enjoyed traveling all over the United States in their motor home. He later began working for the Mt. Whitney Visitor Center helping maintain the parks and recreation in Lone Pine, California. A huge outdoorsman, Elmer loved to fish and go off road dirt bike riding and racing. He also enjoyed listening to classical music.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Sylvia (Tom) Glenn of Columbia, TN, Stephanie Fox of Columbia, TN, John (Carmen) Holmes of Idaho; grandchildren: Gabrielle Weeks, Jacob Kenyon; sisters in law: Idea Machado Ribero, Maria da Graca Viera; special nephew, Rafael M. Ribero; special niece, Rosa M. Ribero; and numerous other nieces and nephews in Connecticut.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Patrick Thomas Glenn; and sisters: Mildred and Barbara Holmes.
