Harry Walker Rountree, age 88, lifetime resident of the Water Valley community, passed away early Sunday morning, December 17, 2023, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at St. Luke Methodist Church on Santa Fe Pike with Brother Larry Tarkington, Reverend Lucinda Sharp, and Keith Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Santa Fe Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 11:00 am until the 1:00 pm service hour at the church. Additionally, Harry's family invites friends and loved ones to join them at the Water Valley Community Center after the graveside service for a time of food and fellowship. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Harry was born August 25, 1935, to the late Paul and Mary Rountree. He retired from Union Carbide and was a lifetime farmer in Water Valley. He was a lover of the land and animals, and perhaps best known as the farmer with the cows in the road! Harry was a very simple man and made friends easily. He was always willing to help others. He also served two years in the United States Army stationed in Korea.
He was married to Peggy Parham for 32 years until her death. On February 6, 2011, he married Barbara Woody Rountree.
Along with his wife, Barbara Woody Rountree, he is survived by her sons, Rickey Woody and Ben (Vickie) Woody of Water Valley; Children of his heart, Jeff and LaGina Lefevers of Water Valley; Grandchildren, Chessica (Jon Paul Jones) Runyon, Dan (Hannah) Woody, Megan (Lindsay) Poynor, and Madisyn Woody; Great Grandchildren, Brooks and Hayden Journey, Hunter Woody, Adisyn and Kendall Runyon, and Avery and Olivia Woody; He is also survived by his very best friend, Millie.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Charles Pigg.
Pallbearers will be Michael Alderson, Caleb Lovett, Henry McGuffy, Raymond O’Field, Winfred Baker, Dwight Groves, Kevin Odom, Harold Padgett, and Jeff and LaGina Lefevers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Everett and Nancy Favors, Ryan, Amy, Brooklyn and Jada Gardner, Pete Bryant, Leah Alderson, Lisa and Gary Grau, Jim Carpenter, Teresa Dixon, William Thomas Byrd, Keith and Debbie Baker, Cindy Baker, Tony Sowell, Ferral and Cody Allen, Sharon and Elton Sisk, Dallas and Teresa Unizicker, Frank Woody, Jr., St. Luke Adult One Sunday School class, and members of the Water Valley Community Club.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to “Harry’s Angels” at Cool Springs Center- Bart Magowan, Becky Tucker, Taffy Sexton, Lori Jones, Sharon Epps, Dr. Natalie Spradlin, and all the nurses for their special care with Aveanna Hospice.
