Helen Elizabeth Gaskill King, age 87, a resident of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at her residence.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2020 at 10AM at Polk Memorial Gardens with Matthew King and Mary Beth King officiating. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Helen was born on July 23, 1932 in Santa Fe, where she lived until William King rode horseback from Williamsport, stole her heart, and moved her to Columbia where she lived the rest of her days. She was the daughter of the late Tiny Hill Gaskill and the late Samuel Gaskill. Helen loved working for the Dixie Manufacturing Company, and when they closed, she worked at most every other shirt factory in town. Helen loved her home on Morris Avenue, and was known as the neighborhood watch, taking care of her neighbors as they did for her. Helen never met a stranger and would give to anyone in which she came in contact. Never one to hang up the phone on anyone, even a Robo call; Helen would be there offering advice and support all night to her friends in need. Dallas the cat was as close to her as any of her children and after her husband passed that seem to be a part of him that she would never part with and always took excellent care of him. She was a lifelong member of First Assembly of God in Columbia.
She is survived by her children: William Michael “Mike” (Cindy) King of Columbia, Debra Jean Moore of Columbia and Elizabeth Ann (Tom) Thompson of Columbia; grandchildren: Brittany Tice, Amy Sutton, Matthew Barlow King, Mary Elizabeth King, Carrie Blair King, Ryan Patrick Doyle and Tyler William Doyle; great grandchildren: Niah King, Malachi King, Cora King, Violet Sutton, Thomas Sutton, William Sutton, Charlotte Sutton, Jack Doyle, Cade Tice, Cason Tice, Canleigh Tice.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, William Michael King, Jr.; and siblings: Nancy Gaskill and Sammy Gaskill.
Acting as Pallbearers: Cade Tice, Matthew King, Gene Moore, Thomas Thompson, Tyler Doyle, and Ryan Doyle.
