James Byrd

March 9, 1930 — July 8, 2019

Mr. James William Byrd, age 89, a resident of Columbia, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019 at Brookdale Assisted Living where he resided for the past two years.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 10AM at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rick Points officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on March 9, 1930 in Maury County, James was the son of the late Paul Eldridge Byrd, Sr. and the late Virginia Lee Byrd. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. He worked for Colonial Bread Company for over twenty-five years before retiring from Ambrose Printing Company. James was a member of West 7 th Street Church of Christ. He loved to watch car racing and loved playing bingo. James enjoyed watching wrestling and especially loved his dog and cat.

He is survived by his nephew: Jimmie Paul (Patty) Byrd of Columbia; nieces: Kathy Slaughter of Spring Hill, Sherri L. (Tony) Wallace of Chapel Hill; and sister in law: Ruthanne S. Byrd of Columbia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Beverly Steakley Byrd; son: Danny Byrd; brother: Paul Eldridge Byrd, Jr.; and nephew: Harry L. Byrd, Sr.

James’ family and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the nurses and staff of Brookdale Assisted Living for their care and compassion during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Safe Place for Animals (SPA), 905 Mallard Dr. Gallatin, TN 37066.
